Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to sustainability leadership, Hemas Consumer Brands (HCB), Sri Lanka’s leading local FMCG company, launched a new initiative to tackle plastic waste, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Neptune Recyclers, one of Sri Lanka’s foremost recycling partners. Hemas Consumer Brands has pledged to collect and recycle 540,000 kgs of plastic waste within the next 2.5 years, which forms part of its larger commitment to collect the equivalent of 100% of plastic waste it generates by the year 2030. This initiative reinforces Hemas’ position as a responsible, forward-thinking corporate citizen determined to create lasting change by reducing the country’s plastic footprint, supporting communities with additional income streams and ensuring responsible disposal of waste.
Commenting on this milestone, the Managing Director of Hemas Consumer Brands, Sabrina Esufally said: “Hemas Consumer Brands remains steadfast in its commitment to building a sustainable future where businesses, communities and the environment are protected. Our newly-launched partnership with Neptune Recyclers is a defining example of how Sri Lankan enterprises can lead with purpose by combining innovation, responsibility and long-term value creation. As we advance our sustainability journey, we are determined to set new benchmarks for corporate stewardship.”
The project will engage between 10 and 25 individual collectors, with the goal of collecting 18 tonnes of
recyclable waste per month over a 30-month period. This structured initiative will result in the
removal of 540,000 kg of plastic waste from the environment. Collectors are expected to
earn and create a sustainable source of income, while contributing to environmental restoration.
The initiative will also focus on building a robust community collection network,
delivering training programmes, providing essential equipment,
and establishing the necessary infrastructure to ensure efficient operations.
Waste streams covered under the programme include Plastics – PET (water and beverage bottles, sanitiser bottles, strapping belts), PP/HDPE (home and personal care products, ice cream containers, plastic milk/sauce cans), PS (yoghurt/ice cream cups), LDPE (clear polythene). Non-plastics such as paper, fabric, aluminium (beverage cans) and e-waste are also included.
Hemas Consumer Brands has a proven track record of driving social and environmental initiatives that restore vital ecosystems, reduce plastic pollution, and promote a circular economy. This latest MoU with Neptune Recyclers underscores Hemas’ proactive approach to sustainability, proving that the company is making a concerted effort to reverse and mitigate the pollution caused by any plastics in its packaging. While serving millions of Sri Lankans with trusted products, Hemas Consumer Brands is equally focused on minimising its environmental impact and protecting the ecosystems on which communities depend.
